Generative AI to Mitigate Organizational Politics

Roger Mitchell |

Office politics has a strong influence on how changes are rolled out within an organization and has the power to build cohesion or entirely derail an initiative.

While there are frameworks and assessments that can be used to identify which cohort(s) people belong to and how best to engage them (more on this in a future email), those are strategic initiatives that require their own change management to roll out organization-wide.

So, let’s assume that we don’t have the time or buy-in to implement one of these framework.

What can we do?

Use generative AI as a thought partner!

Here’s what to include in the prompt:

  1. Background information about the organization, its team / departmental structure, how those groups collaboration, and your role

  2. Details about the initiative and your assessment of the impact it has on various groups

  3. Key stakeholders, their role and seniority, and in which group(s) they have authority and influence

  4. For each stakeholder, provide examples of how they have responded to changes about the initiative and examples of how they have collaborated with others.

With that context, our AI thought partner can help us do these (and more!):

  • Review a communication that we are intending to send about our initiative and how the messaging can be tweaked to resonate with stakeholders

  • Discuss how a change to scope, timeline, or budget could be received by stakeholders and their perception

  • Provide an example of a contentious interaction and ideas on how to gain alignment with those stakeholders

TLDR: Generative AI can help mitigate risks from office politics as we implement changes in our organization and has low barriers to entry.
