Systems & Dogs

Systems and dogs have a lot in common. I love using metaphors to unpack big or unfamiliar concepts. Let’s see how this one holds up.

You might start by researching which breeds are good with kids, energy levels, and how (in)dependent they are. You also might go to the local shelter and just pick the first one you see with an open heart.

Initially, there’s overwhelming joy about this new, fluffy thing. I agree, it’s exciting!

Then, you realize this puppy comes with work. You find a few chair legs with teeth marks, an accident or two happens, and it requires more attention than you previously thought.

Fast forward a year and it’s all grown up. This is where things get interesting.

Perhaps you’re living in a studio apartment and staring at a Great Dane that eats as much per day as an Olympic swimmer’s breakfast.

Or, you’re an avid hiker living in the Rockies and find yourself wanting your Chihuahua to accompany you on your next all-day adventure.

Regardless, you have this living thing you’re responsible for, and it’s a lot easier when your family and friends love (or at the very least, tolerate) your pup.

Before you sign the adoption paperwork, think hard about how a dog fits into your life today and ten years from now. Be honest about what you can handle, what you need, and how it opens and constrains your routines.

TLDR: Systems are dogs. The more you prepare ahead of time, the higher the likelihood of having a good outcome.
