Touch Typing: Still a Skill Worth Learning

A few people ask me each month "what are you using to write your meeting notes", and recently they might ask a follow up like "are you using AI".

After every meaningful call or meeting, I have a set of meeting notes for my prospect or client that I send a few minutes after we conclude via email, Slack, or Teams.

These range from 200 to 2,000 words depending on how long the meeting was, what was discussed, and what the alignment was on the topic.

The answer is potentially underwhelming: "I use my hands".

The trick is that practically anyone can do this, it just takes time and dedicated practice.

Rewinding the clock to 2012, I spent the autumn months learning how to type faster and more accurately with Mavis Beacon. My accuracy was already decent, but the speed is where I needed the most work.

Nowadays, there are many options: Mavis Beacon, Typing Club, Keybr, Monkeytype.

As you get faster at touch typing, be prepared for accuracy to go down, and it will increase as you spend more time at a faster pace.

TLDR: Learn how to type faster and more accurately. Then, pick a format for your notes that you can rely on (teaser: this will be the topic of a future email).
