Using AI to Find & Fill Accidental White Space

A powerful use of AI is identifying accidental white space in how your organization positions itself and executes its business processes. Let's explore how to find and fill these gaps using data and AI.

Accidental white space draws from the concept of white space in design, which refers to areas that are intentionally left blank; except, in this case, we are considering it accidental, thus allowing us to decide whether it should become intentional.

Your organization can leverage AI to find accidental white space by having it play a specific role, providing it background context, and asking questions.

Let's consider a use case with how you position a product or service.

Your organization already has all of these data:

  • Who buys your product or service (i.e. demographics, psychographics, etc)

  • What feedback has been received from customers (e.g. surveys, quotes, anecdotes, etc)

  • What benefits your product or service offers

  • How your product or service is used to solve typical and atypical use cases

  • What your marketing and sales collateral says (e.g. website pages and copy, one pagers, etc)

With all of that background information, you can then identify different roles or personas that you would like to explore and assign one of those to AI.

An example of how this works would be a use case to identify whether your marketing copy aligns and resonates to different personas like prospects, existing customers, and partners.

Craft your initial prompt with these points, then include all of the information from the list above.

  • Background details about your organization

  • What role you play

  • What role you expect AI to play

  • Why you're doing this exercise

Remember, your goal is to treat this like a conversation with a person, not the Google search bar. Pretend that you're drafting an email or leaving an exceptionally long voicemail with voice mode.

You can even ask AI to provide options for how to fill those gaps based on the context you provided about your product or service, how customers are using it, and language that would resonate with the role played by AI.

TLDR: Give AI context about your product or service, then ask it to play the role of a persona involved in a business process to identify gaps.
